As already mentioned in the article on the AirPods, we will gradually publish detailed articles on all other Apple products which are not yet in our comparison database. Today we continue with the complete overview of all Apple Watches released so far and of course this article will also be updated as soon as there are new devices.
Like many things at Apple, it all started with a rumor. At the end of 2012 it was announced that Apple was developing a Smart Watch, at that time it was still thought that it should be called iWatch. From then on there were always new rumors, finally the first smartwatch from Apple was presented at the keynote on September 9th, 2014, under the simple name Apple Watch.
Apple Watch - 1st generation
As already mentioned, the first generation of the Apple Watch was presented to the world public at the keynote on September 9, 2014. Apple Watch shipping began for selected countries in April 2015.
The first generation Apple Watch is available in 2 different sizes. The case of the small model has a height of 38.6mm and is marketed as the 38mm model. The case of the large model measures 42.0mm and is also advertised as the 42mm model. The resolution of the OLED display of the small Apple Watch is 272 x 340 pixels and that of the large model is 312 x 390 pixels.
The first generation is available in different materials and colors (see table). Technically, all models are the same, they have an 8 GB internal memory and support the Bluetooth protocol in version 4.0.
As you can see from their sports version of the Apple Watch, Apple has not only developed the watch as a timepiece, but also as a tool for doing sports. For this purpose, the Apple Watch of the first generation is equipped with a heart rate monitor.
In addition, the Apple Watch also has an acceleration sensor, a gyroscope and an ambient light sensor.

Apple Watch Series 1
The Apple Watch Series 1 was launched in September 2016 and differs only slightly from the first generation of the Apple Watch. Maybe that's why the second generation got the quite confusing name Series 1.
Externally, the two generations are completely identical, the Apple Watch Series 1 only has the newer, faster processor installed with the Apple S1P and could therefore be supplied with updates for longer than the first generation of the Apple Watch. In addition, the Series 1 was only sold with an aluminum housing.

Apple Watch Series 2
The Apple Watch Series 2 was released together with the Series 1 in September 2016 and thus also belongs to the second generation of Apple Watch models. The built-in Apple S2 system chip is identical to the Apple S1P in the Series 1, but has in addition integrated GPS.
For the sporty target group of the Apple Watch, the Series 2 has been given a 50m waterproof housing (IP68). However, that doesn't mean the Apple Watch can handle anything underwater. It can be used normally for swimming in the pool or sea, but the Apple Watch Series 2 is not suitable for high-speed water sports (e.g. water skiing) or diving at great depths.
The dimensions of the Series 2 have changed only minimally compared to its predecessors, so it will continue to be sold in 38 and 42 mm sizes. However, an improved OLED display has been installed, which is more than twice as bright at 1000 cd/m².
Like the first generation, the Apple Watch Series 2 is again sold in 3 different materials. The Series 2 comes in housings made of aluminum, stainless steel and, for the first time, ceramic.

Apple Watch Series 3
Almost 1 year after the release of the Apple Series 2, the successor, the Series 3, came onto the market in September 2017.
The system chip has been further improved and is now called the Apple S3. The supported Bluetooth version is now version 5.0 and in addition to the integration of a barometric sensor for measuring altitude and a few minor changes, there is also a bigger change…
With the Apple Watch Series 3, for the first time you could also optionally buy a mobile version (LTE standard via eSIM) of the Apple Watch. This allows you to do calls with the Apple Watch without an iPhone. Furthermore, the LTE version of the watch has an internal memory of 16 GB, which is twice as large as the model without LTE.
In September 2017, the Series 3 was the top model of the Apple Watches. It remained in Apple's portfolio until September 2022 and ended up serving as an affordable entry-level model.

Apple Watch Series 4
Another year later, in September 2018, Apple released the Apple Watch Series 4.
The case of the fourth generation of the Apple Watch was enlarged for the first time. Both models are now 2 mm higher, the small model now measuring 40 mm and the large model 44 mm in height. The display of the Apple Watch has also been enlarged and is no longer square but round at the corners. The resolution of the new LTPO OLED display has also increased, but has the same number of pixels per inch.
Internal storage has been increased to 16GB for all models and is no longer exclusive to the cellular model. The RAM has also been increased again and is now 1 GB.
With the Apple Watch Series 4, Apple wants to establish the watch more in the field of medical aids. For this purpose, the watch was equipped with an electrocardiogram, which is integrated in the digital crown. This allows the heart rhythm to be analyzed in order to identify harmful atrial fibrillation. In addition, the Apple Watch Series 4 is equipped with fall detection, which automatically dials emergency services when it detects a fall.

Apple Watch Series 5
With the Apple Watch Series 5, which was released in September 2019, the display was expanded by another function, the display is now a so-called always-on display. This means that the display is permanently on and you don't have to move your arm to activate the display. However, the display is slightly darkened and the refresh rate is greatly reduced, so that animations, such as the movement of a watch hand, are not performed.
The internal memory has been doubled again and is now 16 GB. In addition, the Apple Watch Series has been equipped with a compass.
After the Apple Watch Series 4 was only available in aluminum and stainless steel, the Series 5 can be ordered in 2 additional materials. It is available again in the ceramic version, known from the Series 3, and with the titanium version there is also a completely new material.
Also new is the Apple Watch Studio, which was introduced with the Series 5. Here you can choose and buy your personal combination of material, color and bracelet of the Apple Watch.

Apple Watch Series 6
The Apple Watch Series 6 was released in September 2020 in the well-known annual rhythm.
The cellular version of the series now also supports UMTS in addition to LTE, and the built-in WLAN module (W3) now also supports the 5 GHz network.
The medical functions have also been expanded, for example the sixth generation of the Apple Watch has an integrated sensor for measuring oxygen saturation.
For improved evaluation of the fitness functions, the integrated altimeter is now permanently active and can therefore also detect small differences in altitude of up to 30 cm.
The ceramic version of the Apple Watch has been removed from the Series 6, but the aluminum version of the Apple Watch is now also available in red and blue.

Apple Watch SE
Along with the Series 6, the Apple Watch SE was launched in September 2020. In terms of price and features, this is positioned between the Apple Watch Series 3 and the latest model. Like the Series 3, it is still available from Apple until today (July 2022).
The Apple Watch SE is a slimmed-down model of the Series 6. The Apple S5 from the Apple Watch Series 5 of the previous generation was installed as the system chip and the ECG function and the blood oxygen sensor are missing, as is the Always-On -Display.
There is no cellular version and it is only offered with an aluminum case and in the colors silver, space gray and gold.

Apple Watch Series 7
The Apple Watch Series 7 was launched in September 2021. With the Series 7, there was a major redesign of the case for the second time, which now measures 41 mm in height in the small version and 45 mm height in the large. The display has also been enlarged and has approximately 20 percent more display area than the previous generation.
In addition, the front glass has been further improved, it is now more resistant and more than 50% thicker than in the Apple Watch Series 6.
The Series 7 battery has been improved to charge up to 33% faster with the included charger. This makes it possible to charge the Apple Watch Series 7 from 0 to 80% in just 45 minutes.
The Apple Watch Series 7 has not received any new functions in the form of sensors. However, the color palette has changed significantly, some colors have been deleted, others have been added. The color palettes of each version are listed in the table below.

Apple Watch SE - 2nd Generation
[image11]
The second generation Apple Watch SE is the new entry-level model of the Apple Watch portfolio in 2022. It not only replaces the first-generation of the Apple Watch SE, but also the Apple Watch Series 3, which was the entry-level model until now.
Commpared to the first generation of the SE model, Apple has upgraded the second generation. The processor is the same as in the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra and is approximately 20% faster than the processor used in the first generation of the Apple Watch SE. The sensors remain the same, but have been significantly improved technically. One of the biggest innovations is that the SE model is now also available as a cellular version.
The housing is still made of aluminum, but the colors have been completely changed. The second generation Apple Watch SE is now available in the colors: midnight, starlight and silver.
